Abstract

Halliday and Hassan are of the opinion that text is a semantic unit. Also, it includes some factors which give cohesion to the text and distinguishes it from a non text. They believe that these factors are such as reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, and lexical cohesion. Lexical cohesion involves repetition and collocatin. The repetition of a word either literally or semanticly is located in the epicenter of a text. Moreover, due to a common element, it causes coherence between sentences of a text. Nahj al-Balagha, as an influential religious text has this important cohesive factor. However, the repetition of the word may be explored. The special functions of repetition of a word in Nahjo-albalaghe are the signification of Allah, metaphoric language, variety of sermon topic and the specific partial repetition method. Also, the synonym as a type of repetition in Nahj al-Balagha has a particular role of lexical cohesion and persistence of text.
